Basketball Camp 2013: Day 3

After an 8am breakfast, campers headed down to the Barbee for their last full day of practices. This morning, the campers rotated between different stations throughout the gym. Counselors ran the stations and had the guys doing everything from wall-sits to push-ups to passing drills. One group went through a drill which involved picking up fallen teammates. It was so great to watch the guys run so eagerly to help one another. Once lunch and rest period were over, the guys walked back down to the Barbee for 5 v. 5 games.

Campers and counselors spent their last evening together down at the pool, enjoying Dominoes pizza and the cool water.

Though the end of camp is always bittersweet, the guys are very excited to have the parents back tomorrow to show them everything they've learned over the past few days!

Basketball Camp 2013: Day 2

The boys were up bright and early for breakfast in the dining room before walking down the hill to the Barbee Center for morning practice. This morning the boys went through drills in their teams and it was very obvious that things were running smoothly this morning as boys are getting accustomed to drills and to the abilities of their teammates. After a little time for free shooting, Coach Dawson had the 4 current WFS basketball players go through some of the drills that they do in a regular practice, and several campers also got to participate in the exercises.

After lunch, campers had rest period and then had time to visit the school store, and go down to the outdoor pool where the cool water was very thoroughly enjoyed by campers and counselors alike.

Campers spent the remainder of the afternoon and time after dinner back in the Barbee playing 3 v 3 games and continuing to work with their counselors. Towards the end of the night, the Fir Tree opened its doors giving campers a chance to hand out and purchase drinks, milkshakes, burgers and fries before heading back to dorm for lights out.

Basketball Camp 2013: Opening Day

Dowd-Finch was full of campers and parents this morning during registration, and we have a little more than 80 young guys on campus for the next 3 days. During the course of camp, boys will be learning all kinds of basketball skills and techniques from Woodberry's Varsity basketball coach Craig Dawson. Coach Dawson and his staff, including 4 current WFS students, were all very excited for the start of camp.

After registration, the camp headed down to the Barbee Center where the boys were split into teams before an entire group warm-up. The teams separated into different courts to start drills. Several of the coaches had their campers participate in drills that helped them learn names and get to know each other. Once the morning session was finished, the campers headed up the hill for lunch in the Reynolds Family Dining Room before walking back to Dowd-Finch for rest period.

During their afternoon sessions, campers had the opportunity to play 5 v. 5 games with teams in the same age group. Coaches encouraged the guys to focus less on winning, and more on utilizing the skills they were taught earlier in the day. Once practice was complete, the campers had dinner in the dining hall. Before lights out, drinks and milkshakes were offered in the Fir Tree.

The boys will have an even busier day tomorrow so be sure to check back on the blog for more pictures!
